A fixed-point iteration approach for multibody dynamics with contact and small friction

چکیده
Acceleration–force setups for multi-rigid-body dynamics are known to be inconsistent for some configurations and sufficiently large friction coefficients (a Painleve paradox). This difficulty is circumvented by time-stepping methods using impulse-velocity approaches, which solve complementarity problems with possibly nonconvex solution sets. We show that very simple configurations involving two bodies may have a nonconvex solution set for any nonzero value of the friction coefficient. We construct two fixed-point iteration algorithms that solve convex subproblems and that are guaranteed, for sufficiently small friction coefficients, to retrieve, at a linear convergence rate, the unique velocity solution of the nonconvex linear complementarity problem whenever the frictionless configuration can be disassembled. In addition, we show that one step of one of the iterative algorithms provides an excellent approximation to the velocity solution of the original, possibly nonconvex, problem if for all contacts we have that either the friction coefficient is small or the slip velocity is small. Multibody Dynamics Simulation of Planar Linkages with Dahl Friction
It is well known that classical Coulomb dry friction model does not portrays important physical phenomena occurring in the contact between mating surfaces. Moreover, the discontinuity of force at zero velocity has many drawbacks during numerical simulations. In the attempt of exploring alternatives to Coulomb friction model, this paper present the application of the Dahl friction model in a mul...

Aiming at a fast and robust simulation of large multibody systems with contacts and friction, this work presents a novel method for solving large cone complementarity problems by means of a fixed-point iteration. The method is an extension of the Gauss-Seidel and Gauss-Jacobi method with overrelaxation for symmetric convex linear complementarity problems. The method is proved to be convergent u...
متن کاملAn iterative fixed-point method for solving large complementarity problems in multibody systems
Aiming at a fast and robust simulation of large multibody systems with contacts and friction, this work presents a novel solution method which can solve large complementarity problems by means of a fixed-point iteration. When thousands of unilateral constraints are added to the system, our method performs like a Banach contractive mapping, providing a fast monotonic approximation to the exact L...
متن کاملSolving Frictional Contact Problems with Multigrid Efficiency
The construction of fast and reliable solvers for contact problems with friction is even nowadays a challenging task. It is well known that contact problems with Coulomb friction have the weak form of a quasi-variational inequality [KO88, HHNL88, NJH80]. For small coefficients of friction, a solution can be obtained by means of a fixed point iteration in the boundary stresses [NJH80]. This fixe...

In the context of simulating the frictional contact dynamics of large systems of rigid bodies, this paper reviews a novel method for solving large cone complementarity problems by means of a fixed-point iteration algorithm. The method is an extension of the Gauss-Seidel and Gauss-Jacobi methods with overrelaxation for symmetric convex linear complementarity problems. Convergent under fairly sta...
